Rob Got Baptized
August 8 | Medicine Hat, Alberta
On Friday, August 8, a small gathering of Grasslanders got together to celebrate the new life of Rob Mader, who recently committed his life to following Jesus. After dinner, the church family celebrated Rob's new commitment to Jesus by listening to his faith story and watching his baptism. Here's Rob's story in his own words:
Growing up my family and I attended St. Paul’s United Church in Oakville, Ontario. My parents raised me to be a good person and gave me a good life. When I turned 16 attending church was my decision. I don’t remember a lot about my church experience growing up. I think as a kid I enjoyed it but as I got older I found it to be boring. I was around 16 when I decided to stop attending church, at least on a regular basis
Years later I moved to Calgary for school and work and some years after that I was fortunate to land a career with the City of Medicine Hat. I’ve struggled the past few years with finding good friends and was spending a lot of my free time doing things that were not good for me. One day I found an advertisement about Grasslands Church and decided to check it out. I was greeted as soon as I entered and felt very welcomed. I started attending services more regularly as I really enjoyed the music and teachings. I always believed in God but was living life for myself and not following His word.
Later, I was invited to Pastor Bart’s for a newcomer lunch where I was fortunate to meet many great people and also invited to a Discovery Group led by Norm and Linda. We read through the Gospel of John where I learned about the life and ministry of Jesus. I think I always thought that all that was important was that you just attend church every Sunday. I learned that Jesus wants much more than that. He wants to have a personal relationship with me. It was shortly after this study that I knew I needed Jesus in my life. It was late one night and something just came over me. I prayed to God and asked that he would forgive me for the way I had been living and committed my life to following Jesus as my north star.
With God in my life I know that things can only get better. It’s not that I’ve been unhappy, but since having Jesus in my life I find that I’ve been meeting lots of great people and making better decisions on the way I spend my free time. I now believe that I have been saved and when my time comes I have a spot in Heaven.
